Dreams

Dreams, oh dreams. I'm not talking about the kind that helps establish your goals. I'm talking about the kind that visit you while you're sleeping. While dreams can be good, they can also put a damper on your day as well. Such is my situation right now.

Have you ever thought about where dreams come from? Ancient theories might suggest that dreams are visions of future things to come. Others believe that deceased loved ones can visit you in your dreams. Some scientists believe that dreams are enhancements of your subconscious. Whatever the true meaning of dreams is, it is a mysterious and powerful thing. Personally, I believe that dreams usually consist of the brain creating a sometimes jumbled collection of thoughts stemming from what might have been important or stressing events. This can include feelings or thoughts that you've stymied into the back of your head throughout time, or recent events that evoked strong emotions. As you sleep, these emotions and thoughts resurface as your brain is relaxed, letting all thoughts roam free.

Now that is just a theory of mine, but it seems to help me make sense of my dreams most of the time. It can, however, make you feel quite disturbed (depending on how disturbing your dream is). Last night I dreamt a dream that left me feeling more somber than usual when I woke up. Something that I thought I had gotten over reappeared again in my dreams. I can only conclude that I haven't fully recovered. In reality, this thing has only been buried deep into my mind. This isn't the first occurrence in my dreams, but it left a stronger impression on me than most of the other times.

It's annoying. this thought that keeps nagging at me throughout the day. I wish it would just go away and be done with. However, it isn't as simple as it seems. So I ask, do you also have dreams that bring up certain thoughts or events that you thought you had gotten over already? What is your opinion on why we dream, and what decides the contents of our dreams. Is it just random what we dream about, or is there a biological reason to our dreams? Let me know what you think.
